Gauri Kund
Yet another alluring fascination that bears legendary tales and fabulous myths is the Gouri Kund, which is equally revered as that of the Mount Kailash. This water body is described as the lake of compassion in the Shiva Purana, which unfurls the funny but touching story of the elephant headed god. A steep descent from the Dolma Pass will fetch the devotee to this lovely lake that lies at an altitude of 5608 meters. This lake is popularly called as the Parvati Sarovar since it was here that Goddess Parvati breathed life into the image of Ganesh, which she had created from the soap foam on her body. Legend has it that Ganesha was the janitor of Parvathi’s house and once he stopped Shiva from entering to the house and feeling offended, Shiva beheaded the boy. Pravati was grief-stricken and persisted that the boy be brought back to life and Shiva took the head of an elephant and placed it on the body. Though difficult to get in, this lake offers the beholder some of the awe inspiring vistas of Himalayas. One would get the beautiful reflection of the Chhota Kailash peak in its surface and it is undeniably awesome and would definitely took the breath of the on looker.
Lake Mansarovar
A holy lake that is associated with so many myths and legends, Manasarovsr in an altitude of 4556 meters allures the devotees with its devoutness. A tranquil lake in the background of majestic Kailash peak offers a picturesque vision to the beholder. Each year pilgrims from India throngs to participate in the much famous Kailash Mansarovar Yatra on the firm belief that the placid waters of the lake cleanse the mind and body from all sins. Hindu religion taught that this lake is formed in the mind of Brahama and is the place where the Devas descend to take their bath. Mythological belief is that this lake is the abode of swans, which according to tradition are very wise and sacred. The serene environ of the lake houses some monasteries since the Buddhist believe that it was here Queen Maya conceived lord Buddha. Most significant among the viharas is the Chiu Gompa Monastery, which appears as if it has been engraved on the rock. The lake is majestically calm and dignified like a huge bluish green emerald or a pure turquoise set between the two mighty and equally majestic silver mountains, the Kailash on the north and the Gurla Mandhata on the south and between the sister lake Rakshas Tal or Ravan Harda on the west and some hills on the east.
Rakshas Tal
Rakshas Tal at a height of 4515 meters bears a legend associated with the demon King Ravana. Rakshas tal and Manasarovar are considered as sister lakes and are divided by a narrow hill. Legend has it that Ravana had performed austerities here to appease Lord Shiva and being pleased by his devotion the lord allowed him to ask any boon. Ravana asked the god to leave Kailash and the lord readily agreed to stay with Ravana on a condition that Ravana should not put the lord down on the earth. But Ravana could not succeed in keeping his words since the God of Water entered his stomach. As Lord Varuna himself had occupied Ravana's tummy there was an incessant pour of water out of Ravana, which fashioned the lake Rakhsas Tal. This story has gained momentum among the devotees and none dares to taste the water of this kund since it is considered as inauspicious. Like its name Rakshas Tal appears dull and grumpy and it hence it is often linked with the forces of darkness.
Kailash Parikrama
