The holy land of uttarakhand and the mighty Himalayas offer such unusual and utopian experiences that are difficult to find anywhere else. One such once in a life time experience is the NANDA RAJ JAT YATRA better known as the MAHAKHUMB of the Himalayas.
Nanda Devi is the chief patronizing Goddess of Uttarakhand and several shrines are devoted to her all across the central Himalayas. Nanda Devi Fair is one of the most popular festivals in Uttarakhand and attracts people from near and far. Nanda means well-being and prosperity. The fair is held every year in memory of Goddesses Nanda and Sunanda during the month of September and is taken as a symbol of spiritual and material prosperity. The fair is said to have started in the Kumaon region during the reign of Raja Kalyan Chand in the 16th century.
Nanda Devi Rajjaat Yatra
It is the most celebrated and popular religious event held once in every twelve years. It’s a 280 km long trekking pilgrimage spread over 22 days, in one of the most beautiful landscapes of the earth the magnificent Himalayas. Lastly held in the year 2000 this yatra is now being organized this year and will start from 29 august 2013 and end around 16 of September.
This yatra is organized as a procession for the journey of the supreme spiritual goddesses of the people of Garwhal and Kumaon region from her maternal dwelling to her husband home in holy kailash. It combines obscure faith, mysteries, thrills, adventure and congregation of thousands and thousands of devotees. Every aspect of this unparalleled and wonderful pilgrimage right from the start till the final destination is full of surprises devotion and mythological mysteries.
The main attraction of the yatra is a mythical four horned ram know as CHAUSINGHA KHADU and ‘RINGAL KI CHATOLI’ (a devotional symbol to cover Devi Nanda seat like an umbrella). The preparation of the yatra starts when Devi Nanda comes in the dream of a villager of kansua village and prophesies the birth of the four horned sheep. Then the kunwar of kansua village bring the Chausingha khadu and Ringal ki Chatoli to Nauti village.
A golden resemble of Devi Nanda is placed in the chatoli and worshipped along with the four horned ram and from here on the yatra formally begin. With the starting of the yatra thousands and thousands of devotees start walking after the chausinga khadu with more and more people joining along the way covering over 20 picturesque villages and halting points.
The next stop in the yatra is kansua where the Ringal Chatoli is received by the Dyudi priest of kothi chnadpur and here 12 others Chatolis of different local god and goddesses are join the yatra making it more colourful.the next important stop is Kulsari.
At kulsari there is a scared kali yantra which remains grounded at the kali temple and is unearthed for worshiping at midnight of raj jat amavashya and then it is grounded again for 12 years. Then the yatra halts at nanda kesari, from here the chatoli is taken over by the priest of kurud as from here the Nanda Devi of kurud is kept on the seat of Rajjat,the next major stop is wan. At wan the religious brother of goddesses Nanda Latoo Devta is workshipped by the nautiyals of Nauti as they have the sole prerogative of worshiping and opening the doors of the temple of Latoo devta.at Wan the total number of Chatolis become more than 110, and devotees are blessed by each one of them.
After Wan the journey becomes a little ardous and restrictive as from there scared and holy Himalayas begin and articles made up of leathers, musical instruments and pregnant ladies are not allowed beyond Wan. After Wan major stops are Patar Nachuniya, Bedni Bugyal,Roopkund, shila samudramand many more with the journey ending at Hemkund a place between Trishul and Nanda Ghunti.
At the end of the journey the Chausingha khadu is not scarified but is left alone to continue the journey to kailash while the devotees return form hemkund. The four horned ram suddenly disappears fro

We had an unbelievable time in Uttarakhand this winter. Allseasonsz travel agency provided us with excellent hotels, located in the center of the cities, comfortable, and close to the main sights and trendy restaurants. The guides and drivers for our private tours were phenomenal - very knowledgable and well spoken. We have a family of 6, so they arranged transportation for us in a private van, which was beyond convenient! Lastly, they added stops to our itinerary, that I myself would not have chosen. But those spots ended up being some of our favorite places to see! Our travel agency was also extremely flexible in working with us - they respected our desire to have some downtime with the family, as well as making reservations for us at wonderful restaurants!
