Rather than "Welcome to Nainital", the approach streets to this vacationer town are presently wearing another standard Nainital Houseful". Set up by the Nainital police, the banners in Hindi request the travellers not to enter the hill station with their vehicles as all the parking lots are full.
Nainital has 12 parking lots with combined capacity to accommodate about 2000 four-wheelers. The town has been seeing a flood of 3,000 to 4,000 visitor vehicles consistently. The numbers go up exponentially when "weekend tourists" from Delhi and neighboring Uttar Pradesh reach here. Having a tough time managing the traffic, the local authorities at last came up with the plan to ask vacationers to leave their vehicles beyond town limits.
Mahesh Chandra, inspector in-charge, traffic police, said they have put the houseful banners on the approach roads to Nainital, for example, Kathgodham Police Chowki Crossing, Nariman Crossing,Bhimtal Crossing and others.
"One can check the traffic stress in Nainital from the way that on Sunday about 6000 vehicles came out of the town. Nainital has limited parking lots. When they get full, we are left with no other alternative yet to take such a measure," the authority said.
The exceptional step, officials said, takes after the directives issued by the Uttarakhand High Court in April this year. Pulling up the state government for failing to address the traffic problem in the hill town, the high court had guided the specialists to guarantee that "those coming to Nainital with their own particular vehicles make advance arrangements for parking their vehicles". The court had guided the experts to promote the same in no less than four national daily papers and channels and furthermore announce that the individuals who "cannot arrange advance parking should not bring their own vehicles to the town."
With weekend tourists returning, the situation started to improve from Monday morning, Chandra said, adding "ideally it would be normal within a couple of days." Spread more than 11 sq kms, most of the habitations and developments in Nainital are on the hill inclines around Naini Lake, the water body from which it derives its name. With existing parking lots unable to take into account the traveler rush, the district administration is now identifying areas within and on the edges where parking spots could be made.
Earlier, the high court had in 2017 requested that the administration to create an application to enable voyagers to book parking slots before they arrived in Naninital. The court had, before that, directed the district administration to seal all such hotels, guesthouses and homestays that don't offer parking spot to their visitors.
