Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary
Kalatop, a hilltop dedicated to Lord Shiva, boasts of a grand view of the Pir Panjal Range. The hilltop falls in the Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary, whose altitude varies between 1,460-2,750 m. The sanctuary was notified in the 1970s to protect what was once a gaming reserve of the Chamba royals. There are no guided tours and visits are restricted to the Kalatop Peak. Most visitors treat the place as a local picnic spot.To avoid the crowds, take the 2-km path to Kalatop Peak. Most of the park’s steep terrain consists of dense coniferous and oak forest with the upper reaches rich in deodars. The wildlife here includes bear, leopard and the shy ghoral. Kalatop is an open forest, which means that the animals move in and out of it depending on the season. The Kalatop-Khajjiar Wildlife Sanctuary covers a total area of 2,026.89 hectares in the western part of Chamba district, about 10 kms. from Dalhousie. Fringed by the Ravi river on the north, it is densely forested with deodar, blue pine and fir trees. The sanctuary is home to a variety of animals like ibex, deer, leopards, bears, Barking Goral, Serow, Langur, Jackal and Himalayan Black Marten. Several species of birds also nest among the trees making it a birdwatcher's delight. You will need a permit from the Chamba DFO if you want to explore the sanctuary in a vehicle.
