The name Bandarpunch literally means �monkey�s tail� in Hindi and is a lovely mountain in the Western Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. Bandarpunch is a major peak of the Garhwal division of the Himalayas, in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It literally means "Tail of the monkey" or "Tail of Hanuman" in Hindi.

Devoted to Lord Shiva, the Vishwanath Temple is situated around 300 m away from Uttarkashi�s local bus stand. This temple received a new look after its renovation in 1857 by Sudarshan Shah�s wife, Maharani Khaneti. The temple has a Shivling, 90 cm wide and 60 cm high. It is a very famous spot for visitors to Gangotri, Uttarkashi and Yamunotri.

This place is well known for its serene atmosphere which is considered ideal meditation. Gangnani also has several thermal springs the water of which is supposed to work wonders for many ailments. There is a temple dedicated to Sage Parasara who was the father of Ved Vyas.

From this point it is a 2 kilometer trek to the settlement at Bhebra - an idellic village set near a gushing mountain stream, and full of green fields growing potatoes, beans and the famous Rajma (kidney Beans).
