Overview and mystery

Kasar Devi is situated on a hilltop, on the edge of a ridge off the Almora-Bageshwar highway on the Kaashay hills of Kumaon Himalayas. As it is situated above the ridge of Almora town, it is accessible through eight-km hike from Almora or 10 km by road.[1] One km away is the village of Kalimath popular with tourists. Also close by is the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, which lies 30 km away.

It is being developed as a tourist place in Uttarakhand and Uttarakhand government have many plans to develop this place. Presently the work of construction of ropeway from the district headquarter to Kasar Devi is in progress.A winding walkway from gateway on the main road, right the beginning of the village, leads up to the temple.Swami Vivekananda visited Kasar Devi in 1890s, and numerous western seeker, Sunyata Baba Alfred Sorensen and Lama Anagarika Govinda.

History

In 1890 Kasar Devi first became known when Swami Vivekananda visited and meditated here and has mentioned his experience in his diaries.

In 1930, Danish mystic Sunyata Baba (Alfred Sorensen) came here and lived here the over 30+ years, as did Ernst Hoffman, who became Tibetan Buddhist Lama Anagarika Govinda and Li Goutami. This led to a series of spiritual seekers from the west, visiting them. In 1961, Govinda was visited by Beat poets, Allen Ginsberg, Peter Orlovsky and Gary Snyder.

In later history, at the peak of the Hippie movement, the area also became a part of the Hippie trail. Crank's Ridge, colloquially known as Hippie Hill, which lies ahead of Kasar Devi became a popular destination. It became home to several bohemian artists, writers and western Tibetan Buddhists, and even visited by mystic-saint Anandamayi Ma. The ridge got its name amongst hippy circles, after American psychologist Timothy Leary streaked here in the 1960s. Leary wrote majority of his psychedelic prayers here. Thus, through the 1960 and 1970s, the area was visited by personalities of the counter-culture, George Harrison and Cat Stevens, Western Buddhist Robert Thurman, and writer D. H. Lawrence, who spent two summers here.

Kasardevi Temple Almora Reviews

A peaceful temple

A peaceful temple which is mostly crowded as foreigners also visit. The temple is known for it's presence of unique energy fields which have healing effects. People who have meditating skills can definitely experience it. The view from this temple is also excellent. At a walkable distance, there's a hill top called Crank's Ridge. Anyone can easily spend an hour or two.

absolutely astounding place.

An absolutely astounding place with its gorgeous views and serene atmosphere along with divine or religious reasons ofcourse. The place has two temples on a hill top, the lower one is kasar devi temple & like 100 steps above it is the shiv temple. All in all like 280-300 steps but the steps are very wide & aged people can even rest by the side of steps.

One more super interesting fact which marks this place as magical & eternally divine is that earths van allen belts , fields of high magnetic around earth passes through this place just like only two more places on earth namely macchu picchu in south america & stone henge in UK.

Its said, Swami vivekanand attained enlightenment here but all in all a mystic place & definitely must visit in almora.

You can go by your own car here but if you are scared of driving on steep roads & curvy bends you may hire a taxi too.plenty of parking here.Even tea & maggi shop available at below temple.

I went second time by my own car using google maps..

must must go place

A must must go place for it's significance. If you are keen to meditate, feel the need to reboot. According to Nasa...amongst the 3 most powerful places on earth fir it's electromagnetic field and positive energy. Also do meditate in a tiny cave which will definitely blow your mind. Swami vivekanand got enlightenment here. Please maintain silence and do not treat it as a tourist place...respect other's..
