The Manali-Kullu corridor, along National Highway 21, has become a favorite tourist escape in recent years with the growing popularity and availability of adventure sports. River rafting in particular is well suited for the water rich rivers which flow through the North India state of Himachal Pradesh.
A total of 41 officially registered river rafting agencies are located along the Kullu Valley. Drop points begin 20 kms south of Manali near Katrain, and extend to the city limits of Kullu. Not a rafter? Inexperienced persons can become a skilled rafter in just a few hours of training although a minimum age of 12 is required for Manali Kullu rafting. All safety equipment such as life jackets and helmets are provided by licensed rafting operators. Rates start as low as Rs 450 per person for the shortest stretches.
Beginners should look for rafting points catering to Grade II rapids near Raison and Babeli. These river stretches between 2.5 nd 3.5 kms offer moderately clear passages and safe waters. More experienced rafters will want to look for drop points near Pirdi which provide Grade III and IV rapids; river stretches between 7 and 14 kms provide difficult narrow passages that require high level of skill in maneuvering through irregular and dangerous waves. Plan for a full day of activity even for the shortest runs.
