The Hanifl Centre at Woodstock School would be hosting the Mussoorie Mountain Festival from March 7 till 9. A communique from the organizers said the 3-day festival will have speakers from around the world discussing topics related to "Health and Risk Management for Outdoor Programmes in the Himalayas."

The list of speakers includes Kuntal Joisher, the first vegan to climb Mount Everest, Seth Hawkins, an award –winning emergency physician, Prerna Dangi, national champion in rock climbing, and wilderness medicine specialist Dave McEvoy. The festival will also see a live music performance by 'Traffic Jam', a Manipuri band based in Delhi and Singer-songwriter Ady Manral, the organizers said.

Delay in reconstruction of Jhulaghar affecting livelihood and tourism

The delay in the reconstruction of Jhulaghar complex, situated on the Mall road, has left many shopkeepers impatient. With the tourist season around the corner, the shop owners, who were displaced from the site fear loss of business due to the impending construction work.

Shripati Kandari, who ran photography shop in the Jhulaghar complex, said, "We were told that we will be called back in 6 to 9 months, but it has nearly been three years and we are yet to get our shops back. Our business has been closed since then and we are struggling to make our ends meet."

Similar is the story of around 20 other shopkeepers who were shifter from the Jhulaghar complex. "We were asked to conduct business on the roadside to earn our living. So, effectively from shopkeepers we have been reduced to street vendors," says another shopkeeper who does not wish to be named.

Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) had inititated the reonstruction and redevelopment work of Jhulaghar in 2016. The site, back then, was a highly popular hangout spot among the tourists. However, the demolition of the existing structure in 2016 led to the dislocation of a number of shopkeepers and the construction work has not yet been completed.

Presently, the under construction site does not present a pretty picture to the tourists and the accumulated construction material adversely impacts the beauty of the Mall road prompting tourists to neglect the site. When asked about the matter, Assistant Engineer of MDDA, Manoj Joshi said that he did not have any knowledge about this matter as he has been posted to Mussoorie recently.

Sunil Parashar, Executive Engineer of MDDA said "The chairman of Municipal Corporation (MC) has asked MDDA to handover this site to them so that they can take up further construction of the complex. We are in the process of formalizing the handing over formalities," Parashar told.

However, Anuj Gupta, MC Chairman, blamed MDDA for delay in construction work and also for the "poor quality of work". "The work which should have been completed in nine months has been stalled since last three years and also the quality of construction is quite poor," Gupta said. He added that the MC is taking over the site from MDDA so that it can complete the work in a time bound and efficient manner.

Rain damages Haradiya bridge walls, traffic diverted

Following the collapse of the protection walls of Haradiya Bridge due to heavy rains, traffic movements on Thal Munsyari road has been halted till Saturday night in view of the security of the commuters.

"The area received 30mm rain in the last 24 hours due to which the Haradiya bridge walls got damaged. The traffic has been diverted to Jauljabi Madkot route. The repairing works are underway and the traffic movements will resume from Sunday," Amit Saini, Junior engineer Public works Department (PWD), said.

Meanwhile, the city residents are facing discomfort due to the closing down of the stretch. "Vehicle owners do want to use Jauljabi Madkot road as it multiplies the distance and the condition of the road is also not good," said a local resident.

5- Day spring carnival concludes in US Nagar

A 5-Day spring carnival in Udham Singh Nagar held in association with The Times of India concluded amid much fanfare at the district sports stadium in Rudrapur. The event was inaugurated by chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat on 16 February 2019. During the course of the event many artistes showcased their talent while foodies sampled palatable dishes, ranging from street food to local produce. Students from the district also participated in sports, dancing, drawing, painting, singing and music competition.

On the last day of festival, melodies belted out by Voice of India fame Pawandeep Rajan, Sankalp Khetwal and Punjabi singer Sukhwinder also enthralled the audience. Neeraj Kharwal, district magistrate of Udham Singh Nagar, said that the carnival had generated an amazing response.

Gadkari lays foundation for Rs.12K cr projects in Haridwar

Union minister for road transport & highways, water resources, river development and Ganga rejuvenation Nitin Gadkari on Thursday laid the foundation stone for projects worth Rs 12,000 crore in Haridwar. The minister also dedicated Chandi Ghat River Front Development Project in Haridwar on the left bank of Ganga to people of the state. The Project had cost Rs 70 crore.

Gadkari ladi the foundation stone for a 50-km long ring road in the town worth Rs3,650 crore, completion of the work on Haridwar-Dehradun National highway in two phases worth Rs 594 crore, one-km long bridge over Mayapur escape channel and widening of Haridwar-Nagina Road into four lanes.

The foundation was also laid for Roorkee-Chhutmalpur-Gagalhedi and Chhutmalpur-Ganeshpur national highway worth Rs 942 crore. Gadkari also said that the government had sanctioned projects such as development of Iqbalpur canal, rejuvenation of Banganga River and beautification of Har-Ki-Pauri. Of 33 proposed sewage treatment projects in the state, the minister said that 19 have been completed and six were inaugurated on Thursday.

"Beside, 38 ghats worth Rs 150 crore and 3 sewage projects worth Rs 400 crore are being dedicated to people," he said. While claiming that there was no dearth of funds for Ganga, he appealed to the citizens of India to donate whatever amount they can to keep Ganga clean. Gadkari said, "I give you my word, the river will be absolutely clean by March 2020." Gadkari also advised people to avoid travel by road and instead opt for air or water travel. He also suggested that Uttarakhand should be developed into a bioaviation hub.
